Three of our favourite places

By Wateredge Inn

Rydal Mount and Gardens

If you have ever visited Ambleside, or any other part of the Lake District, you will know there is never a shortage of things to do and see, even when you are lucky enough to live in the area there is still never enough time to do everything you want to do. There are a few places though that lure us back time and time again so we are sharing three of our favourites that are right on the doorstep.

Skelgyll Woods

If you want to escape the crowds and head off on a mini adventure then Skelgyll Woods is the place to go and only a couple of minutes walk from Wateredge Inn. If you are lucky enough to be walking here in spring this ancient woodland is carpeted with a mass of bluebells and is the perfect place to sit on a bench with your picnic lunch. If you don’t have long you can take the shorter route but if you like exploring then head out to the top of Jenkin Crag, through Stagshaw Garden and back through the Ambleside Champion Tree Trail.

Rothay Park

Just a short walk from the centre of Ambleside this is a popular place but big enough to find your own secluded spot for some peace and quiet. Surrounded by dramatic views of some of the most beautiful fells in the Lake District with the quietly flowing river Rothay running through it the park has a football pitch, recently upgraded children’s adventure playground, plenty of picnic benches, large grassy areas and natural rock outcrops to give a sense of being out on the fells. Perfect for an afternoon stroll or maybe an evening picnic.

Rydal Mount

A five minute drive from Ambleside takes you to Rydal Mount and Gardens, the historic family home of William Wordsworth. As well as the spectacular views of Windermere, Rydal Water and the nearby fells the gardens at Rydal Mount are an absolute delight to explore and the whole estate has a really tranquil and peaceful feel to it. Wordsworth was a keen gardener and the five acre area he landscaped has remained very much as he originally designed it with fell-side terraces, rock pools and an ancient mound. If you want to make a day of it then take a look around the 16th century house and maybe treat yourself to a trip to the tea room.

We are always happy to offer suggestions on places to visit, walks to explore and the top must-see destinations. Just ask our friendly reception team or get in touch before your visit so you can plan your holiday adventures before you arrive.
