The Lake District is the perfect place for outdoor events and there is no shortage to choose from, come rain or shine, mid-week or weekend there is always something to keep even the most energetic of people busy. Here are a few to whet your outdoor appetite over the Christmas break and maybe make some sporty New Year resolutions for 2018.
Fred Whitton - Grasmere - Date TBC (usually first weekend in May) - Registration 3rd January
How about the famous Fred Whitton Cycling Challenge one of the most popular sportives in the UK which covers a brutal 112 miles around some of the Lake District’s steepest roads. Definitely not one to be underestimated the ‘Fred’ is most famous for being difficult with a final sting in the tale at 98 miles of a 30% gradient climb. The fastest riders will fly round in an unbelieveable six hours but eleven hours and over is not uncommon for the average sportive rider. If you are a keen cyclist then this should definitely be on your list.
The Cumbrian Challenge - Grasmere, 18th - 19th May
A charity event supporting Walking With The Wounded this is a fun but challenging event for teams of four. Take on the challenge with your mates over the Lake District fells alongside previously wounded servicemen and women. There is a route for all abilities ranging from bagging one peak on a 16km course to a tougher four peaks over 29km distance. Find out more here
Brathay Marathon - Brathay, 20th May
The Brathay Marathon has been voted the ‘most scenic’ as the route takes you around Lake Windermere with fantastic views of the surrounding Lake District. Quite a tough and hilly route but you will be cheered on by enthusiastic supports right up to the last hill which makes it’s way through the stunning grounds of Brathay Hall. The Brathay Marathon is also the grand finale of the 10 in 10 which sees competitors run the marathon route for ten consecutive days, you will have to be quick to catch them though, even after nine days of running some of them still post record times on their last day!
Great North Swim - Windermere, 8th - 10th June
This is the event to be at if you’re an open water swimmer, or fancy having a go. Over the last ten years the event has grown to a staggering 10,000 swimmers taking part over varying distances from half a mile right up to 10k. This year there is a 250 metre race for those just wanting to dip their toe into the world of open water swimming. The event has a proper festival feel to it, really well organised with family activities, tasty treats from local food producers, beer tent, music and entertainment. It’s another great one to come and watch even if you don’t fancy going for a dip in Windermere Lake. Find out more here
All the events are a short drive from us here in Ambleside so why not make a weekend of it and come and stay.
